Review:

Sixteen year old Gemma doesn't think that she knows Ty, a young man that she sees staring intently at her at the Bangkok airport. Intrigued by the mysterious stranger's curiosity, she sits down to have coffee with him before meeting her parents. A day later, she is surprised and horrified to learn that she had been drugged in the airport, her mouth stuffed with cloth, her clothes torn off and changed, and her body stuffed in the back of a truck. She is reluctant to acknowledge how far off the grid she really is, but she slowly begins to realize that Ty has taken her to the most isolated and uninhabitable place known to man.

Stolen is Gemma's letter to her captor. Gemma writes honestly about her narrow escape out of the backlands of Australia. The harshness and emptiness of the setting of the story gives voice to the unspoken emotions that both characters feel throughout their ordeal. Psychological, powerful, and unsettling, Stolen is a one-of-a-kind book that puts another face on a pathological kidnapper. Not only are readers able to sympathize with Ty, they are able to grasp how Gemma is able to sympathize with him once she understands his story. It comes to light that Ty and Gemma have crossed paths before.

Stolen is recommended for mature readers who enjoy mystery, suspense, and stories about kidnapping. Gemma is presented as a strong, yet vulnerable heroine who courageously fights to escape from her kidnapper.

Reading Level: Intermediate
Notes about Audience:
This book is intended for mature readers, ages 16 and up.

Opening lines: You saw me before I saw you. In the airport, that day in August, you had that look in your eyes, as though you wanted something from me, as though you'd wanted it for a long time.  ~ pg. 1

Favorite line(s): You watched me. You were wilder than I'd ever seen you, but you were still as stone. Just the sound of my breaths, getting faster and faster, hung between us. Your hands were clenched in fists. I saw the veins sticking out on the back of them and the whiteness of your knuckles. I risked a look back at your face. ~ pg. 58
